the Foodnetwork.com front page. It will help me get into the food blogging mood and will probably be pretty comical.
“What kind of story can you create out of that?” you might ask. “The story of a maniacal/possibly revenge-seeking, web editor of Irish descent, duh,” I might possibly respond. “Story” = vandalism.

Various old time radio commercials from Mr. F. Le Mur Collector at archive.org

and this great compilation “Crime Jazz: Music in the First Degree” that I picked up from a library sale 8 years ago.

We wrote our script in bits and pieces on a googledoc and sort of came across our plot by accident during class when we were supposed to be listening to 5 minute segments this past Thursday. A happy accident.

We recorded the voices around the long table in the technologist office with one microphone in the middle. My voice was booming, so I had to lower it and raise the other members’s voices in “post production,” which took forever (8ish hours to put the whole thing together production wise? probably a good estimate.) I think that was really the only major hiccup. Otherwise I’m proud of how it turned out. If there is an award for old time radio dramas in this day and age, I feel like we are in the running.

This will probable be updated with more behind the scenes stuff.

Mysteriously Mysterious Mysteries Bumpers

I figured I’d post the radio bumpers that we made. Two of them had audio problems when we made them in class (Dear Jim Groom, tell us in advance next time and I’ll bring in a real microphone), so I redid them.

Mysteriously Mysterious Mysteries in 5 Minutes

So, we ( Call ean , Jordan and myself) went with the radio mysterio-drama route. We actually did a big chunk of this as a one take recording with us sitting near the microphone. I’m more comfortable with my of adobe audition v 1.5 from 2004 (geez is it really that old now?)…so I used that instead of audacity. I added some “bottomOfTheBarrel” reverb to Colleen’s voice to try to make her sound like she was on the other end of the phone. I pitch-shifted Jordan’s voice down a few decibels to make her a better warpanther.

The intro and outro music is Skip Martin’s “Riff Blues”
We used these sounds from Freesound.org:

I finished at 1:55pm, exported and uploaded the file to groom at 1:59pm with excruciating speed, anxiety and agility for a person who rarely believes in deadlines (and tends to be late, but it’s usually worth it). I worked my fingers off and I’m sweating at the brow with such intellectual exertion. I need a drink.

I think the radio design has been my favorite / most successful assignment. I’m really happy so many people have enjoyed it. When I was making it, all I could think of was how epic it would be. If only I had made it bigger. Oh well, I’m going to do that tomorrow.

As for everyone else, I’ve seen a lot of really inspiring work. I loved Sarah’s Super Hero Valentine’s Day cards. They reminded me a lot of Brandon Bird’s Law and Order Valentine’s Day cards, which was a major plus. If we still had little valentine’s bags/boxes in class, I would have printed these out.

I really liked Tempy’s Animated Pokemon Cards. They really bring out the pokedex in all of us. I didn’t have enough time to make my own, but I may try over break.

Also, Colleen’s playlist poetry was one I wanted to try. I have a ton ton ton of music on my poor hard drive (got a back up I’m going to switch to this weekend), I might as well put it to good use.

Intro audio to a trailer for ds106 the movie

This is as close to bitching about this class as I could. It sounds more like you could play it over the beginning of a trailer for ds106 the movie. Maybe show some cars or dust blowing in the wind and then close up on the Reverend. I just now realized I’m a day late. Who turns things in on a Wednesday at midnight?

edit: The song is “Open Heart Surgery” by the Brian Jonestown Massacre, just the best revivalist rock band around.

Radio T-Shirts

So, while we all wait for me to redo my amazing radio logo design to make it big enough to fit on a tshirt (the quality degrades too much when you resize it up)((Also I’m trying to put together a resume for my future life/battling disillusionment/would you like to give me a job?)), here are a two shirts I designed for WMWC (UMW’s other radio station) a few years ago.

I silk screened two runs of the first shirt (no idea how many, at least a hundred?), but the second one was deemed too controversial/discriminatory by our faculty adviser. (Turns out Fredericksburgers find communism puns to be of the utmost vulgarity)

Yeah that’s braille. Yes, I realize it’s not very tasteful. I’ve since taken Foss’s DisLit and hope I am absolved of my past transgressions.

DS106 Radio Design

I made a design for ds106 radio. It could be a logo, or a poster, or a t-shirt, or a tattoo or an etc.

There are binary lightning bolts, billowing smoke and children running away from the explosive force that is ds106 radio.

We used to have a house show house that we called foghaus for various reasons, one of which is that there was an overused smoke machine. One night, we were sitting around a fire in the backyard, passing the guitar around, drinking some beers, smoking some cigarettes, having a jolly old time, etc. It was a few weeks after Christmas and someone had walked around the neighborhood and grabbed the trees that people had put out for the trash. It was a great idea, it was a terrible idea, it probably could have used some forethought, but regardless, we set the tree standing straight up on top of the fire. The flames instantly shot up at least 30 feet in the air. I, being weary of cops and just generally not wanting trouble, ran to the frontyard. I could still see the flame over the roof. I got in my car and started it, thinking I was going to make a quick getaway, but a few friends had, had the same idea as me and got in my car before I had a chance to pull out from the curb. We made a caravan to the gas station and bought another 12 pack. We slowly pulled back up to the house, no cops.
